Today, in this blog, we'll discuss the longest-running trains of Indian Railways. As we often travel to several places by trains, but long-distance trains have their own charm. So, without any further ado, let's start with the first train. 

1. Dibrugarh - Kanyakumari Vivek Express (Train Number 15906/15905)

Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express is a Weekly Express train of the Vivek Express series which runs from Dibrugarh Railway Station in Assam to Kanyakumari Railway Station in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost end of India. It covers almost a distance of 4,218.60 kilometers and passes through nine states of India which are - Assam, Bihar, Nagaland, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerela, and Tamil Nadu. 

This train presently holds the record of being the Longest Running Train Route in the Indian Railways both in terms of its distance as well as time. The train has 56 halts across its route which covers its distance in 80 hours (nearly 3 to 4 days).  The average journey time of this train is 82 hours and 50 minutes. It operated every week every Saturday. The operating speed of this train is around 51 km/hr.   

The train has started its Service on 26 November 2011 and is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone (NFR Zone) with its headquarters in Maligaon, Guwahati (Assam). 

The Route of this train is as follows - 

It starts from Dibrugarh at 23:05, then it passes through different cities like New Tinsukia Jn., Dimapur, Guwahati, New Bongaigaon Jn., New Alipurduar, New Jalpaiguri Jn., Rampurhat Jn., Asansol Jn., Bhubaneshwar, Vishakhapatnam Jn., Vijaywada Jn., Renigunta Jn., Salem Jn., Coimbatore Jn., Ernakulam Town, Thiruvananthapuram Central, and Kanniyakumari. 

Because of the Corona Pandemic, this train is running as a Covid Special Superfast Express Train (05905/05906) every Saturday per week.

 2. Thiruvananthapuram - Silchar Superfast Express ( Train Number 12507/15 and 12508/16 )




The Thiruvananthapuram Central - Silchar Express is a Superfast Express train that runs between Silchar (Assam) and Thiruvananthapuram Central (Kerela) which is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone (NFR). It holds the world record of the 28th longest train service in the world.

At its initial stage, it ran between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Guwahati. But from 21 November 2017, it has been extended to Silchar. Due to this extension, this train becomes the 2nd longest-running train along with the Longest-running Superfast express train. 

The first service of this train was started in January 1984 and after its extension to Silchar, the first service of this train was started on 21 November 2017. This train covers a distance of around 3,932 km which runs every week. The average running speed of this train is 55 km/hr which covers the distance in 74 hours and 55 minutes ( which is nearly 3 days).

This train covers almost 9 Indian states that are - Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerela. 




The route of this train passes from cities like Silchar, Badarpur Junction, Lumding Junction, Guwahati, Kamakhya Jn., Rangiya Jn., New Bongaigaon Jn., New Jalpaiguri Jn., New Farakkha Jn., Howrah Jn., Kharagpur Jn., Cuttack Jn., Bhubaneshwar, Khurda Road Jn., Vizianagaram Jn., Vishakhapatnam Jn., Vijaywada Jn., Salem Jn., Erode Jn., Coimbatore Jn., Ernakulam Town, Kollam Jn., and Thiruvananthapuram Central. There are 57 halts on the train's route. 

This train is also canceled for some temporary reasons due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. 

3. Himsagar Express (Train number 16317/16318)


The Himsagar Express train is a weekly express train of the Indian Railways running between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Jammu & Kashmir and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. This train becomes a connection from the northernmost part of India to the southernmost part of India. It is the Third Longest Running Train on the Indian Railways. 

In 72 hours (or 3 days), the train covers a distance of 3789 kilometers at a speed of 52 km/hr and it passes through 12 Indian States and there are nearly 69 halts in the entire route of this train. This train runs at an average running speed of around 53 km/hr. 

The first service of this train was started on 3rd October 1984 and is operated by the Southern Railway (SR) zone. The route of this train passes through several cities like Jammu Tawi, Pathankot Cantt, Jalandhar Cantt Jn., Ludhiana Jn., Jind Jn., Rohtak Jn., New Delhi, Faridabad, Agra Cantt, Gwalior Jn., Jhansi Jn., Bhopal Jn., Itarsi Jn., Nagpur Jn., Balharshah Jn., Vijaywada Jn., Tirupati, Salem Jn., Coimbatore Jn., Ernakulam Town, Kollam Jn., Thiruvananthapuram Central, Nagercoil Jn. and Kanniyakumari. 




This train passes through the states and union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerela, and Tamil Nadu which means it passes through 11 Indian States and 1 Union Territory. 

Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, this train is also canceled for a temporary time period. 

4. Navyug Express (Train Number 16687/16688)



The Navyug Express (Train Number 16687/16688) is a weekly train that operates between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Mangalore Central. It takes about 68 hours to cover a distance of 3,685 km and is the fifth longest-running train in Indian Railways. The first service of this train was initially started on 31st August 2015. This train is controlled by the Southern Railway (SR) Zone in Indian Railway. 

It comprises 61 halts in its complete journey from Katra to Mangalore Central. This train passes through multiple Indian states which comprise Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, with some parts in Kerela and Tamil Nadu. 

The train runs from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Jammu Tawi, Pathankot Cantt, Jalandhar Cantt Jn., Ludhiana Jn., Jind Jn., New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Agra Cantt, Gwalior Jn., Jhansi Jn., Bhopal Jn., Nagpur Jn., Warangal, Vijaywada Jn., Tirupati, Erode Jn., Coimbatore Jn. to Mangalore Central. 

Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, this train is also canceled for a temporary time period. 

5. Tirunelveli - Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Link Express (Train Number 16787/16788) 




The Tirunelveli - Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra is a link express train that is operated by the Southern Railway Zone (SR). It covers a distance of 3,632 km in 71 hours and 20 minutes. It's a bi-weekly train which means that this train runs every Monday and Friday. The average speed of this train is around 51 km/hr. 

There are, in total, 62 halts in its complete journey from Tirunelveli and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. This train passes from different Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Kerela, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. 

The train runs from Tirunelveli Jn., Madurai Jn., Tiruchchirappalli Jn., Erode Jn., Tirupati, Vijayawada Jn., Warangal, Balharshah Jn., Nagpur Jn., Bhopal Jn., Jhansi Jn., Gwalior Jn., Agra Cantt, Hazrat Nizamuddin, New Delhi, Jind Jn., Ludhiana Jn., Jalandhar Cantt Jn., Pathankot Cantt, Jammu Tawi, and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. 

This train is now running as a Covid Special train with the train number 06787/06788. This train runs weekly every Monday from Tirunelveli to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Thursday from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Tirunelveli Junction. 

6. New Tinsukia - Bengaluru Weekly Express (Train Number 22501/22502) 




New Tinsukia - Bengaluru Weekly Express is a weekly superfast train that connects Tinsukia city, which is the easternmost town of Assam with the South Indian Metropolis Bengaluru. The first service of this train was started on the 4th of January, 2010, and is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone. 

This train covers a distance of 3590 km in 65 hours and 20 minutes. This train leaves from New Tinsukia every Friday and arrives in Bengaluru every Monday. There are 37 halts on the train route. This train passes from the different Indian states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Orrisa, West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam. 



This train passes through different cities like New Tinsukia Jn., Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Guwahati, New Bongaigaon Jn., New Alipurduar, New Jalpaiguri Jn., Malda Town, Bolpur Shantiniketan, Howrah Jn., Kharagpur Jn., Cuttack Jn., Bhubaneshwar Brahmapur, Vishakhapatnam Jn., Vijaywada Jn., Perambur, Katpadi Jn., and KSR Bengaluru City Jn. 

This train is now operating as a Covid Superfast Express Train with the train number 02250/02249 which runs every Friday from New Tinsukia Jn. 


7. Kochuveli - Amritsar Weekly Express ( Train Number 12483/ 12484) 



Kochuveli-Amritsar Weekly Express is a superfast express train of the Indian Railways which connects Kochuveli in Kerela and Amritsar Junction in Punjab. This train is operated by the Northern Railway zone. It covers a distance of 3,597 km in 58 hours 30 minutes. 

This train operates at a speed of 60 km/hr. This train passes through different Indian states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerela. This train has around 25 halts in its journey from Kochuveli to Amritsar. 

The route of this train passes through these cities which starts from Amritsar Jn., Jalandhar City Jn., Ludhiana Jn., Ambala Cantt Jn., New Delhi, Kota Jn., Vadodara Jn., Surat, Panvel Jn., Ratnagiri, Mangaluru Jn., Ernakulam Jn., and Kochuveli. 

Due to the Corona Pandemic, this train is currently canceled for some temporary reasons. 

8. Bangalore Cantonment - Agartala Humsafar Express (Train Number 12503/12504) 



Bangalore Cantonment - Agartala Humsafar Express is the longest-running Humsafar Express of the Indian Railways, which is a fully air-conditioned express train that connects Bangalore Cantonment in Karnataka and Agartala in Tripura. This train is being operated on a bi-weekly basis. The train passes through the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Tripura. During its journey, the train also touches some parts of Jharkhand in the Pakur district but doesn't have a stoppage there. 

The initial service of this train was started on 5th January 2018 and is currently operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway. There are a total of 28 halts in the entire train route. This train covers a distance of 3,599 km in just 65 hours and 30 minutes. The average running speed of this train is around 65.66 km/hr. 


The route of this train is as follows -  It starts from Bangalore Cantonment, Katpadi Jn, Perambur, Vijaywada Jn., Vishakhapatnam Jn., Khurda Road Jn., Bhubaneswar, Kharagpur Jn., Malda Town, New Jalpaiguri Jn., Kamakhya Jn., Guwahati, New Haflong, Badarpur Jn. and ends with Agartala. 

Due to the Corona Pandemic, this train is also canceled for some temporary reasons. 

9. Kochuveli - Dehradun Superfast Express (Train number 22659/22660)



The Kochuveli Dehradun Superfast Express is a Superfast Express train that is operated by the Southern Railway zone that runs between Kochuveli and Dehradun in India. This train runs via Kottayam. It operates as train number 22659 from Kochuveli to Dehradun which has 24 stops in its route, while it operates as train number 22660 in the reverse direction which has 25 stops in its route. 

This train covers a distance of 3,459 km in 57 hours and 25 minutes with an average speed of 60 km/hr. As the average speed of the train in Indian Railways is above 55 km/hr, as per Indian Railways rules, its fare includes a Superfast surcharge. 



This train passes through 9 Indian states of Kerela, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It runs from Kochuveli via Kollam Junction, Ernakulam Town, Shoranur Jn., Mangaluru Jn., Madgaon Jn., Ratnagiri, Panvel Jn., Vasai Road, Surat, Vadodara Jn., Kota Jn., Hazrat Nizamuddin, Ghaziabad Jn., Meerut City Jn., Haridwar and Dehradun Terminal. 

This train is also canceled for some temporary period, due to the Corona Virus Epidemic. 

10. Raptisagar Express or Trivandrum - Gorakhpur Express ( Train Number 12511/ 12512)


The Raptisagar Express is a Superfast train that runs tri-weekly between Trivandrum Central and Gorakhpur in India. The current operator of the train is the North Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. The name "Raptinagar" is given to the train which connects the cities Thiruvananthapuram which is situated near the Arabian Sea and Gorakhpur from where the Rapti river flows. 

The initial service of this train was started on February 15, 2001, and the train route is extended to Thiruvananthapuram Central. for the Trivandrum Central to Gorakhpur train route. There are 60 stops in the Trivandrum Central - Gorakhpur train route 

The Trivandrum Central to Gorakhpur train route completes a distance of 3,248 km in 57 hours 05 minutes with an average speed of 55 km/hr. It passes through the Indian states of Kerela, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. 


The train route for this train is as follows which is the extended route - Thiruvananthapuram Central, Ernakulam Jn., Palakkad Jn., Erode Jn., Katpadi Jn., MGR Chennai Central, Vijaywada Jn., Balharshah Jn., Nagpur Jn., Itarsi Jn., Jhansi Jn., Kanpur Central, Aishbagh, Gonda Jn., and Gorakhpur. 

In the present scenario, this train is operating as a Covid Special train between the route of Kochuveli and Gorakhpur Junction with the train number 02512/ 02511.
